While systems are in place to maintain a level of security it ultimately comes down to the responsibility of the tattoo parlor to make sure that their equipment and staff are educated properly to ensure that safety of their customers and employees.
The current lawsuit casts a shadow over the tattoo industry which has exploded in to the mainstream in the last decade and more recently in the past year with the successful reality tv series Miami Ink series.
The $10 million class-action lawsuit has been launched against an Oshawa body art studio, customers that had received a tattoo or body peircing from Nov 2006 till Aug 1 2007 were asked to be tested for blood-borne diseases due to faulty sterilizer, which may have left customers exposed to unsterilized equipment.
The statement of claim alleges negligence on the part of the studio and its owner, Hugh Towie. The sterilizer was being operated at lower than the required 132C, “such that Hepatitis B and C and HIV could have survived the steam treatment,” the claim says.
Those customers currently undergoing the blood tests have a long 6 month wait till they receive their HIV results.
